What is Eschatology?

People who study the bible often ask, what is eschatology? Many have never heard of the word or can pronounce it. Eschatology pronounced, es-ke-tal-o-je, is made up of two Greek words. The first, eschatos means last or final. The second, logos, means word or study.

Eschatology can refer to the study last things of any category, human life, animal life, plant life, events, etc. However, Biblical eschatology is the word or study of final things.

The final things are those related to the Second Coming of Christ, the judgment, the coming of the eternal kingdom, the resurrection of the dead and the end of the world/age.

Eschatology is not limited to the study of the endtime or last days, it is also a study of what follows the last days. By this is meant the new covenant, the age to come, i.e. new heavens and earth, the eternal kingdom, eternal life.

The eschatology in the Bible speaks of the end of that what was temporal. The dissolution of what was temporal leads naturally to what is eternal.

The Old Covenant was temporary. God found fault with those who could not keep it and removed it. Its transition into the new eternal covenant is taught in many passages in the Bible, (Matthew 5:17, 18; 2 Corinthians 3:7-12; Hebrews 7:18, 19). Old things passed away. All things became new. This was the goal of eschatology.

Seeking more information on what is eschatology? An excellent place to begin would be J. Stuart Russell's The Parousia. This book helped me tremendously after I discovered fulfilled prophecy. It's value is not only a scholarly work, but it is one of the earliest works devoted to fulfilled bible prophecy. The book is a classic work, paperback, 570 pages.
